American Outlaws: Knoxville, TN Chapter

managing social media for the soccer supporters group

My favorite volunteer role so far has been with The American Outlaws, 2023-24. If you’re not familiar, AO is a national organization with more than 200 local chapters. AO brings soccer fans together to cheer on the US women’s and men’s soccer teams.

I mainly focused on social, and my duties included:

  • Running social media for the Knoxville chapter

  • Establishing and maintaining a new brand/look for the graphics

  • Help organize watch parties for about 30 matches per year

  • Partner with One Knox (local professional soccer team) to support each other’s events

For the graphics, I chose to always use the same color scheme for each of the teams (men’s and women’s) to help our members understand which team the graphics pertain to at a glance. For the men’s team graphics I use an orange/red gradient color scheme and for the women’s team I use blue/black gradients.

It’s given me a great opportunity to design some graphics and merch in Canva and Illustrator and experience what it is like to be a one-person Communication Team.

The organization didn’t use email or Instagram prior to me joining leadership. I also set up a private Facebook Group that is just for members. I worked to integrate all these platforms into our strategy to get more soccer fans together at events!

Check out links to the Instagram and Facebook below, as well as a sampling of the graphics I created.
